Why It’s Unique

Galapagos is home to species found nowhere else on Earth. Each island combines different terrain, vegetation, and wildlife, creating a landscape of exceptional ecological variety.

What makes the archipelago especially distinctive is the close relationship between land and sea. Coastal zones, marine habitats, and terrestrial ecosystems all play a role in the islands’ natural character.

The Galapagos Archipelago consists of 13 major islands, 6 smaller ones, and over 100 islets and rocks, scattered across 45,000 km² of ocean. The islands lie atop the Nazca tectonic plate, moving eastward over a stationary hotspot in the Earth’s mantle — creating a “trail” of volcanic islands, much like Hawaii. The youngest islands — such as Fernandina (last eruption in 2020) and Isabela — are still volcanically active, showcasing dramatic shield volcanoes like Wolf, Darwin, and Sierra Negra. In contrast, older islands like San Cristóbal and Española are heavily eroded, with sedimentary deposits and rich coastal habitats.​

Biodiversity Hotspot

Despite their barren appearance, the Galapagos support a surprisingly rich mosaic of ecosystems: lava fields, arid zones, cloud forests, coastal lagoons, and vast marine habitats. The islands are home to: Marine iguanas, the only seafaring lizards on Earth, Flightless cormorants, lava gulls, and Galapagos penguins.

CLIMATE & SEASONS

The climate is defined by two major ocean currents:

  • The Humboldt Current (cold, nutrient-rich, from the south) — brings the cool, dry garúa season (June–November)
  • The Panama Current (warm, tropical, from the northeast) — dominates during the warm, wet season (December–May)

The islands change through the year, and so does the wildlife experience. Breeding periods, ocean conditions, and seasonal shifts influence what visitors see and how the islands feel.

  • December–May: Best for swimming/snorkeling; lush vegetation; more rain but calmer seas
  • June–November: Rich marine life; rougher seas; cooler, cloudier days — better for birdwatching and hiking
